2 Cafe Giang – The oldest coffee shop in Hanoi, the cradle of egg coffee
2.1 The birth of Giang coffee
During more than 70 years of construction and development, Giang has always been the most famous coffee brand in Hanoi, attracting both Hanoians and tourists. If you have the opportunity to come to the capital and not visit Giang cafe, it will definitely be a huge mistake.
The first egg coffee was born at Giang cafe, created by Mr. Nguyen Van Giang. The origin of this drink is that when he worked as a bartender for the 5-star Sofitel Metropole Hanoi hotel, because of the lack of fresh milk for coffee, Mr. Giang thought of trying to use eggs to prepare it. And from that experiment, egg coffee was created that is still pleasing to the hearts of people to this day.
That rich coffee when combined with the rich egg flavor creates a very special flavor and is well received by many people. By mid-1946, Mr. Giang decided to quit his job and open his own coffee shop, building his own brand. Perhaps at that time, he did not expect the shop to achieve so much success.
2.2 Ups and downs in 70 years of Giang cafe
When it first opened, the coffee shop was just a small temporary location, but then thanks to customers’ support, the shop gradually moved to a more spacious premises at 90 Cau Go. Around 1988 – 1989, when Mr. Giang passed away, his descendants branched out to open their own egg cafes.
Having gone through many ups and downs of the times, to this day, fortunately, Giang Coffee still maintains its brand and flavor. Every day, the address 39 Nguyen Huu Huan is always bustling with customers, both Vietnamese and foreign customers, not simply coming to drink coffee but also coming to enjoy the ancient flavor.
Cafe Giang at 39 Nguyen Huu Huan is currently opened by Mr. Hoa, Mr. Giang’s youngest son (old address at 7 Hang Gai). As for Giang cafe at 106 Yen Phu, it was opened by Mr. Hoa’s brother. Dinh Coffee Shop in Dinh Tien Hoang is owned by Mr. Bich, Mr. Giang’s second daughter. According to Mr. Hoa’s words, “He teaches all of his children the same recipe, but if you are observant, you will realize that each restaurant is different, including the decoration style, because of the senses and receptiveness.” Each person’s is completely different.”
3 Innovation in the flavor of Giang coffee
In the past, Mr. Giang only brewed egg coffee hot. However, with the development of the times, trends have changed many times, so the shop is increasingly developing many new flavors. Uncle Hoa is considered the direct successor of his father’s egg coffee, but just one dish is difficult to create lasting vitality for a brand. So he made other dishes such as egg green beans, egg cocoa, egg beer, egg rum, egg cinnamon, egg matcha… He shared: “When I make it, I have to be able to drink it before I can make it. But customers don’t. It’s also very diverse, one guy even asked for egg yogurt. He said it’s not okay, what should I do if he drinks it and has a stomach ache?
With hundreds of beverage brands from around the world being imported into Vietnam, there were times when it was thought that traditional brands would no longer have a chance to compete. But in reality, over the past 70 years, Giang coffee has never lost its solid position in the hearts of Hanoi people. Even the attraction to tourists is growing, both domestic and international tourists.
When asked if he was afraid that his traditional brand could not compete with the current beverage market, Mr. Hoa shared: “Firstly, they are a big company, hundreds of people have the formula, and I It’s a family heirloom, no one has my secret. Second, my price is too cheap compared to foreign drinks. Western coffee is nearly a hundred thousand per cup, our family has twenty-five thousand, so there’s What do you have to worry about?”
4 “Natural aroma” – Giang’s egg coffee has conquered the country and the world
Since Giang’s egg coffee was born until now, it has never had to advertise heavily but mainly relies on good reputation from far and wide, so people spread it from word to word. The taste of coffee here and the pleasure of sipping a cup of white coffee in a small shop on a street corner brings a feeling of relaxation that is hard to find anywhere else.
After more than 70 years of preserving the brand only in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, at the end of April 2018, Giang took a breakthrough step by “exporting” to Japan, in Yokohama, a port city about 30 minutes from Tokyo. – 40 minutes by train. Each cup of egg coffee and egg cocoa is placed in a bowl of hot water to keep the drink warm exactly like how it is served in Hanoi. The price of each cup of egg coffee sold in Japan is 480 yen (about 100,000 VND).
American television channel CNN once evaluated egg coffee that this is one of the most impressive specialties of the capital Hanoi. The Japanese newspaper prtimes.jp also reported on the opening of Giang cafe in the Land of the Rising Sun with the first facility located at 78-3 Yamashita Street, Naka District, Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama City. This newspaper page also gave a very beautiful description to Giang coffee “delicious egg coffee originating from Hanoi Old Quarter, Vietnam”.
In Hanoi today, there are many places selling egg coffee. But nowhere else can you get the same flavor as Giang, what’s missing is experience, family secrets, spirit, and memories. Even during the US-North Korea Summit held in Vietnam, Giang’s egg coffee was also honored to be chosen to serve with more than 3,000 cups.
Coming to Giang, you will definitely experience delicious coffee flavors. Along with that is national pride, proud of 70 years of a pure Vietnamese brand that still maintains a solid foothold in the market. Therefore, Vietnamtravelio hopes that you will not miss the opportunity to sip this famous cup of egg coffee during your trip to explore Hanoi.
